Goldschmidt and LVB bring smart lubrication to the rails

Together with Leipzig’s public transport company (LVB), we presented the joint development project between Goldschmidt and LVB to the local press – the smart rail lubrication system – and demonstrated how it works directly at the track loop of tram line 11E in Hänichen, Leipzig.

Since November 2024, line 11E has been connecting the north-west of Leipzig with the city centre every 10 minutes. The track loop also includes one of a total of 12 new and smart rail lubrication systems, which Goldschmidt already developed and implemented in cooperation with LVB.

The smart rail lubrication system not only lubricates the tram rails as the tram approaches to minimise annoying noises and to protect the rails and wheels from corrosion, but – and this is the smart feature of the system – it also lets you know when it needs something.

Whether the door to the storage system is open, the lubricant is empty or there is a malfunction – thanks to the digital integration of the rail lubrication systems into Goldschmidt’s Dari® system and the connection to LVB’s asset management system, the technical teams receive a message on their devices when an event occurs and only need to turn out when it is really necessary.

The solution is therefore not only quiet and resident-friendly, but also extremely resource-efficient, which makes it a great help in the network expansion of the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe in Leipzig’s suburbs – such as in Leipzig Hänichen.

Outlook:
Currently, a quarter of the rail lubrication systems in use on the Leipzig network have already been converted to the new smart system. Other existing systems will now be gradually modernised and new locations equipped with the smart solution – for quieter and future-proof local transport in Leipzig.
