Training Courses

Duration

  • Assistant welder: 3 weeks
  • Thermit® welder:  4 weeks
  • Thermit® Head Repair (HRW): 3 days

In General

  • On-site workplace competency assessments available
  • Facilities comply with Network Rail Specification NR/SP/CTM/005 and 006
  • Additional training services: small plant, oxy/fuel gas cutting, abrasive wheel handling
  • We offer bespoke training courses including on-site support with all associated welding procedures, training records, and permits.

Specialist Training

For specialised welding applications:

  • Welding heavy section crane rails
  • Special sites
  • Overseas projects deploying local contractors 

Certification & Permits

All Thermit® welders working on railway infrastructure must:

  • Attend an approved training course at an approved center
  • Hold valid certificates of competence

Sentinel Permits

  • Required for all staff working on Network Rail infrastructure (welders and assistant welders)
  • Sentinel registration included in the training procedure
  • Currently registered skills: Sentinel Code

Training Thermit® Head Repair (HRW)

Process Overview

  • Developed by Thermit Welding (GB) Ltd
  • Repairs rail head defects in plain line
  • Detects small isolated flaws (visual or UTV)

  • Multiple repairs per welding shift 

Training contents

  • Defect removal (flame cutting & grinding)
  • Conventional low pressure preheating (SkV-E parameters)
  • Single Use Crucible (SUC)
  • Network Rail approved Thermit® portions
  • Standard welding, trimming & profile grinding

Training Weld Inspector

WI.1 Aluminothermic Welds

  • Duration: 3 days
  • Compliant with Network Rail requirements
  • Includes tutorial and practical sessions
  • Written and practical examination

WI.3 Flashbutt Welds

  • Duration: 0.5 days
  • Add-on to WI.1 or standalone competency

Training VERSE Operators

In General

  • Initial training and bi-annual competency assessments
  • Compliant with Network Rail Specification NR/SP/CTM/005
  • Classroom session and on-site practical training
  • Maximum 4 trainees per course
  • Trainees provide own VERSE equipment (checked & calibrated) 

Certification

  • Thermit Welding (GB) Ltd permit issued, valid 2 years
  • Annual workplace competence assessment recommended
  • Not incorporated into Sentinel system
