Milestones

Goldschmidt Sweden traces its origins back to 1887, when Martin Sjölander founded a blacksmith workshop in Omaha, Nebraska, USA, producing, among other products, prairie wagons. In the late 1890s, he returned to Sweden and established a blacksmith shop in Osby, laying the foundation for the company’s long-standing engineering tradition.

The company entered the railway sector in the mid-1950s with the development of its first rail-related machines. In the late 1960s, it introduced its first lift access platforms, followed in the early 1970s by the development of the world’s first access platform specifically designed for overhead contact line work, marking a significant advancement in railway electrification maintenance.

In 1974, the company developed its first road-rail vehicle based on a bus chassis, and in 1976 introduced the first hydrostatic road-rail vehicle with a turnable bogie, establishing its position as a pioneer in this segment.

During the mid-1970s, a strategic collaboration began between AB Sjölanders and Swedish Rail System (SRS), which ultimately led to the merger of the two companies in 2005, forming SRS Sjölanders AB.

The company became part of the Goldschmidt Group in 2016, strengthening its international presence and expanding its technological capabilities in railway infrastructure solutions.

In recent years, the Osby facility has been expanded to approximately 5,000 m² to support growing production volumes while maintaining high standards in quality and sustainability. Since 1976, more than 500 road-rail vehicles have been delivered to state-owned and private railway organisations worldwide.

In 2026, Goldschmidt Sweden received EBA approval from the German Federal Railway Authority for its LRB®26 road-rail vehicle, marking an important milestone in the company's international expansion and demonstrating compliance with one of Europe's most demanding railway approval frameworks.
